Night Alone by Raymond A. Foss
Bright noisy streets
Unattached and watching
The jazz, the sass,
The Street, Bourbon

Late April
Thick with tourists
Easy marks
And their watchers
In the shadows
On the corner
Bump and grab
proposition

Takes all kinds
Shapes and colors
On the street
N.O. P.D. there but not
Edgy

Past midnight
Hum of the beat
Continues
Lingers
Smells and moods
Mix
In the dark
Away from the centers
Under the porches

Later still
Same and different
Slower darker
Safe on the street
Danger near
Old Absinthe
A trumpet wails
Without competition
Any more

Another drink
Another tip
Another scene surveyed
Last call
4 AM
