Arguing the Essential Nature by Raymond A. Foss
Now this was a conversation,
as I learned later,
that was not in the right place
a high school classroom, after the end of the day
was not the right venue, the right ambiance
the right place at all

We needed to be in a dark, clove smoke-filled room
sipping espresso and wearing berets
speaking of Dylan, Luther, Descartes
Nietzsche, of Walden, of excess
of the Grapes of Wrath
and Lord of the Flies
Living the grunge beat life
to get to the truth, the heart of our jive
Arguing the essential nature of man
is he a carnal beast or controlled by
better angels, teacher and oh so certain
high school Junior
fighting, with facts, reason, bluster
for causes without consequence
to better a grade in a team-taught course
no effect on anything
but debating skills
